The draws for the UEFA Champions League were announced in Nyon, Switzerland and the competition’s defending champions FC Barcelona will be up against AC Milan once again. The Spanish side was in the same group as AC Milan this season and both the matches were high on goals, closely-contested and entertaining affairs with Milan drawing in Camp Nou with a goal in the dying minutes and Barca emerging victorious in San Siro. Ultimately, Barca topped the group.

Guardiola will appreciate the fact that the second leg will be at home (on April 3), a situation he always prefers. The first leg will be played on March 28 at San Siro. If Barca are able to contend with AC Milan’s challenge and progress into the semi-finals, they will face the winner of the tie between Benfica and Chelsea, creating a repeat of the 2008-09 semi-final in which Barca progressed to the finals thanks to Iniesta’s memorable strike at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona vs. AC Milan

November 23, 2011

San Siro

Milan, Italy

Nights like tonight are why the world loves the Champions League. Barcelona and AC Milan, two giants of the modern game slugging it out under the Italian night sky with as many stars on the pitch as above it. There was also bitterness, rivalry and six foot four scores to settle in the shape of Zlatan Ibrahimovich, coming face to face with his old boss Guardiola for the first time since slamming him in his recent autobiography.

Barça marches on in Copa del Ray; defeats L’Hospitalet 1-0

12 11 2011

Barcelona vs. L’Hospitalet

Stadio de L’Hospitalet

November 9th, 2011

Barcelona, Spain

In front of a limited crowd of 2,000 (the low turnout was probably due to the high prices of the tickets), L’Hospitalet hosted neighbours Barça in what was the reigning European champions first match in the 2011-12 Copa del Rey competition. Barça lined up Pinto as keeper, while benched players such as Fontàs and Maxwell got a chance to play. Barça lineup showed a mixture of young players and superstars, having Xavi and Iniesta in the midfield, Cesc as “false nine”, David Villa as left winger and Puyol at centre back.

Sharing the pitch with the World Cup-winning players were two promising stars, Cristian Tello and Rafinha, who made their debut with the first team. Tello came in the lineup as right wing, next to Cesc. Meanwhile, Rafinha replaced Cesc in the second half.  They completed a long list of 21 young players that have risen from La Masia to the first team since Pep Guardiola arrived.

The first minutes showed Barça’s traditional possession, but the team didn’t get many chances to score. The first chance for Barça was a nice shot from Villa, which was cleared by Moragón, the goalkeeper of L’Hospitalet who would have a fine night keeping his team’s scoreline respectable.

Barça crushes Mallorca 5-0; Messi records hat-trick

30 10 2011

Barcelona vs. Mallorca

Camp Nou

October 29, 2011

Barcelona, Spain

After a 0-0 draw against Sevilla, a lackluster 1-0 win over Granada, and yet again the chorus of critics starting up their song, FC Barcelona came back with a vengeance to shut them up. Messi was the man of the hour (or 90 minutes, rather) when he redeemed himself and then some by scoring a hat trick in less than 30 minutes after a three game drought. More importantly, the team put up 5 goals on the scoreboard to prove, once again, that the blaugrana colors are still the best.

Guardiola did take notice of some tired legs on his team after a grueling schedule of a game every three days. Thus, Valdés, Alves, Mascherano, Abidal, Adriano, Keita, Busquets, Thiago, Villa, Messi, and Cuenca received the start while players like Xavi, Fontas, and Maxwell were left off the squad list entirely.

Barcelona rise atop La Liga standings with 1-0 win over Sporting Gijón

7 10 2011

Sporting Gijón vs. Barcelona

Estadio El Molinón

Gijón, Spain

October 2nd, 2011

Sporting Gijón fell to their mighty visitors on Sunday night in Gijón, in a hotly contested match from start to finish. The last two matches between the Catalans and Gijón were a 1-1 draw and a harrowing 1-0 victory for Barcelona. This match would be no different, and for Gijón it presented an opportunity to prove to Spain that they were ready to make a run away from the cellar of the league table. Especially at El Molinón, where giants come to be slain. Barça entered the match as heavy favorites, but were still looking for their first away win in La Liga play. Thanks to the left boot of Brazilian midfielder Adriano Correire, Barça narrowly escaped with a victory.

Pep Guardiola and the reigning Champions of Europe took the field on a rainy, frigid night in the capital of Belarus to play the home squad, BATE Borisov, in a Champions League Group H match. Barça looked to gain their first win in Champions League Group H after sputtering at home in the first matchup with AC Milan. They didn’t have to worry about a draw in Minsk. From the start, this match was not even close to being on an even playing surface. Even if the match was lopsided, it was a special treat for the 24,000 Belarusian fans who crammed into the tiny Dynamo Stadium to cheer on the home side in the dark and rainy Eastern European night.

Barcelona Annihilates Atlético Madrid, 5-0

24 09 2011

Barcelona vs. Atlético Madrid

Camp Nou

September 24, 2011

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona walked into Camp Nou to face Atlético Madrid on Saturday night with hopes of erasing the recent memory of a 2-2 draw with Valencia on the road. Barça did just that. With the aid of a Leo Messi hat trick, the Catalans thoroughly routed the visitors from Madrid in a downpour. Atlético came into Camp Nou with a fairly strong squad, minus the services of Diego Forlán and Serigo Agüero, and hoped to get a point from the champions. But it wouldn’t happen on this night. Saturday night belonged to the crisp chips of Xavi Hernandez and pinpoint precise flicks of Leo Messi’s left boot.

Atlético began the match almost taking a 1-0 lead just four minutes in, but the left post was not kind to Tiago who was left empty handed as a frozen Victor Valdes watched his shot go clanging off the post to his left. From that point on, it was all downhill for Atlético. Five minutes later, Xavi found David Villa streaking along the left flank with a perfect lob behind the line of defenders. Villa controlled the ball on the turf, made a quick 90 degree cut to rid himself of a pesky defender, then slapped the ball under the arms of Courtois and into the far corner. Nine minutes in and Xavi’s brilliance was already showing up, and Villa notched the opening goal once again at Camp Nou.

Barça – Atlético: As It Happened

24 09 2011

0′ – Kickoff at Camp Nou. It’s an outright downpour tonight as Barcelona is going left to right in their red and blue stripes. Atlético wearing their white and red stripes.

3′ – Barça seems to be falling into a 3-1-3-3 formation, with Busquets roaming back near the back line to clear up any trouble before it actually turns into a problem.

4′ – Atlético hit the post! Tiago got a pass from Reyes 20 yards from the goal, and sent a flying curler off his right foot past a motionless Valdes. Barça dodges a bullet early.

9′ – Goal Barcelona! A brilliant show by Xavi and Villa. Xavi clips a perfect lob pass across the pitch, left to right to Villa who skates into the box, jukes a defender and snaps a shot under the keepers arm for the first goal of the match. Barcelona 1-0

13′ – Pedro misses a great chance in front of goal as Atlético is getting short-passed to death early on. Pedro took a long Xavi cross down just five yards from the left post and curled it just outside the opposite post. Nearly 2-0 for Barça.

15′ – Goal Barcelona! Atlético defender Miranda gets caught with an embarrassing own goal just six minutes after Barça took the lead. Messi darted into the box, fired a shot that was saved by Courtois, only to hit Miranda nearby and fall back into the net. That seems like it could be a theme tonight… Barcelona 2-0

24′ – Atlético finally crosses the midfield line, and they don’t seem to have lost much of their energy just yet. Falcao seems intent on pressing down the field as quickly as possible to take advantage of the limited opportunities that he will get in the match.

26′ – Goal Barcelona! Lionel Messi shows why he is the best player in the world with a fantastic goal. Messi took a short corner from Pedro, got past one defender, then bewildered two more at the corner of the box and the smashed a blazing curler past the Atlético keeper. There wasn’t much room for that shot to get through, but somehow it did. And it curled around the post too. Absolutely awesome. Barcelona 3-0

30′ – Through 210 minutes of La Liga football at Camp Nou, the score is Barcelona 16, Everyone Else 0.

35′ – Pass, pass, pass, lob, scramble, pass, pass, pass. All to easy for the Catalans, and they’re not even trying. They haven’t even broken a sweat. Well, you can’t really tell with the downpour, but that’s what we think.

41′ – Almost a moment of brilliance from Cesc. He stood 25 yards out and chipped one high above the keeper’s head and it skimmed off the top of the crossbar and out of bounds. Five inches lower and Barça would’ve had a 4-0 lead at the break.

45′ – Haltime at Camp Nou, Barcelona leads 3-0. The Catalans have had a mere 71 percent of possession thus far. Not bad, some might venture to say. All too easy, without much effort. Don’t think Atlético stands much of a chance with the field conditions and the… Well… Opposite team playing like they are.

46′ – Underway again at Camp Nou for the second half. Atlético subs in Turan for Suarez in a forward position.

48′ – Turan’s cross flashes right in front of goal and presents Victor Valdes with his first scare in the last hour. Promising start to the second phase for Atlético.

54′ – A fabulous feed from Fábregas gives Messi a shot at goal, but Courtois denies him with a great save just five yards out. Before the corner, Gerard Piqué enters the match for Sergio Busquets to a rousing ovation from the audience at Camp Nou. Piqué is about to get his first La Liga action of the year.

67′ – Xavi’s chip passes keep pounding away at the Atlético defense. He seems to be able to find little dimples in their defense and keeps plopping the ball into the perfect spot where Villa, Messi, and Pedro await. On this occasion, Xavi’s chip to Messi who relayed to Villa in front of the goal almost led to another goal, but Courtois came out to make a drastic save on Villa’s effort.

70′ – (See 35′)

71′ – Piqué is handed a yellow card for his hard challenge on Falcao. It looked like Piqué still got to the ball first…

78′ – Goal Barcelona! Terrifying goal by Leo Messi. His second of the match, Messi picked up the ball some 40 yards from goal and skipped his way to the edge of the box where he nailed a low driver with his left foot past a mortified Courtois in goal. How do you stop that? The answer is that you can’t. Terrifying. He’s also 24 years old. He’s not even old enough to rent a car in the United States. Barcelona 4-0

81′ – Maxwell comes in for Abidal on the Barça defense.

84′ – Atlético almost gets on the board as a Turan faked out Valdes who went sprawling. Turan dabbled a pass to Gabi who spanked a rocket past the post by just a foot. Almost a goal. So close!

89′ – For what it’s worth, Atlético has 37 percent of possession in the second half. That’s good against Barcelona. 37 percent! Ridiculous statistic.

90+1′ – Goal Barcelona! Messi has another hat trick, wow. The Argentine picked up the ball on the left flank, played a give and go with David Villa in the center, and then smashed a shot right through the wickets of Courtois and into the far corner. His second hat trick in three matches. I guess there is a reason why he’s the best in the world. Barcelona 5-0

(In other news: Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick against Rayo Vallecano earlier today)

90+3′ – Final whistle at Camp Nou. It wasn’t pretty for Atlético, and it wasn’t hard enough for Barça. It was a slaughter from start to finish and Barça barely broke a sweat. This is a pretty good visiting side, too. More to come in the complete game recap.

Barcelona salvages a crucial road point at Valencia

24 09 2011

Valencia vs. Barcelona

Estadio Mestalla

September 21, 2011

Valencia, Spain

Valencia proved to be the first team to attack consistently against Barcelona, and managed to drag out a 2-2 draw with the defending La Liga Champions. Los Che and El Blaugrana went back and forth in a captivating match, never gaining much momentum before the other side squashed it. For Barcelona, it is the second road draw against league opponents this year.

The scoring started early and was an odd goal, as Roberto Soldado provided the pressure and off a deflection, Barça’s Éric Abidal knocked the ball into his own net. Only seven minutes into the match, Barça had already fallen victim to their own defensive woes. Without Gerard Piqué in the lineup, Abidal has been forced to cover more ground and take on more responsibilities. Estadio Mestalla was erupting early, but the Barcelona attack would have no part of it. Messi set up a perfect relay of hot-potato passes with Pedro, resulting in a laser skip shot from Pedro to level the score in the 17th minute.
