The draws for the UEFA Champions League were announced in Nyon, Switzerland and the competition’s defending champions FC Barcelona will be up against AC Milan once again. The Spanish side was in the same group as AC Milan this season and both the matches were high on goals, closely-contested and entertaining affairs with Milan drawing in Camp Nou with a goal in the dying minutes and Barca emerging victorious in San Siro. Ultimately, Barca topped the group.

Guardiola will appreciate the fact that the second leg will be at home (on April 3), a situation he always prefers. The first leg will be played on March 28 at San Siro. If Barca are able to contend with AC Milan’s challenge and progress into the semi-finals, they will face the winner of the tie between Benfica and Chelsea, creating a repeat of the 2008-09 semi-final in which Barca progressed to the finals thanks to Iniesta’s memorable strike at Stamford Bridge.

Youngsters lead charge in 4-0 dismantling of BATE Borisov

Barcelona vs. BATE Borisov

December 6, 2011

Camp Nou

Barcelona, Spain

Barça had the luxury of playing the last group game of the UEFA Champions League tonight safe in the knowledge that they would top their group regardless of the result. Another upside of this was that the youngsters from Barca B were given the opportunity to step out of the long shadows cast by the resident superstars and prove what they could do in front of the Camp Nou.

Starting berths were handed out to Champions League newcomers Montoya, Fontas and Bartra at the back, with Maxwell the only one of the back four with decent first team experience. Dos Santos and the Alacantra brothers, Rafinha and Thiago, composed the midfield and a new look forward line of Cuenca, Pedro and Sergi Roberto were eager to impress on such a prestigious stage.

From the get go Barca were electric. The players were all over the park and anyone who tuned in late could have been forgiven for thinking that Guardiola had fielded his best eleven. Thiago, less content to play it safe among his old friends from the B team, showed some of the deft touches and flicks that have cemented his place in the first team squad.

Milan, Italy

Nights like tonight are why the world loves the Champions League. Barcelona and AC Milan, two giants of the modern game slugging it out under the Italian night sky with as many stars on the pitch as above it. There was also bitterness, rivalry and six foot four scores to settle in the shape of Zlatan Ibrahimovich, coming face to face with his old boss Guardiola for the first time since slamming him in his recent autobiography.

The story of Isaac Cuenca

The La Masia conveyor-belt at FC Barcelona seems to produce an endless stream of talent for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Isaac Cuenca it’s latest product.

The 20-year-old anounced his arrival following a second-half strike against Mallorca last weekend, after making is La Liga debut at Granada four days previous. It’s been a meteoric rise for a player who has almost gone under the radar of La Liga watchers while fellow youngsters, such as Thiago Alcantara have stolen the headlines. The arrival of a new boy-wonder at the Camp Nou is nothing new of course – we have witnessed many of the current first-team make the same impact over the past ten years, but Cuenca’s story is slightly different.

Messi nets hat-trick; Squashes Viktoria 4-0 to advance in Champions League

Prague, Czech Republic

Barcelona and Lionel Messi had a busy weekend silencing critics at the Camp Nou with a five nil hammering of visitors Mallorca, after a patch of unremarkable form. The Champions were on the road  traveling to Prague hoping for a win to guarantee their place in the final sixteen of the Champions League with two group games yet to play.

Pique and Puyol returned to the side in a team that saw numerous changes from Saturday night’s game. The dynamic duo were barely missed at centre back in a side that has gone eight consecutive games without conceding a goal. Xavi and Iniesta made way for Fabregas and Thiago and the homegrown hero, Isaac Cuenca, was handed his European debut in the place of the injured Pedro. On his two hundredth game in charge Guardiola has succeeded in finally evolving his dream team of the past three years into the dream squad, boasting far more strength and depth than bygone seasons.

The opening exchanges were tense with both sides playing attractive attacking football with neither side able to pull the trigger. In the middle of the park, Fabregas and Thiago seemed to dictate the pace of the game. Petrzela almost took advantage of some flatfooted defending from breaking free on the counter attack from midfield. He bore down on goal and picked his spot and was denied by the agility of Valdes. The defensive triangle of Puyol Pique and Busquets showed early telling signs of a lack of match fitness and the home team seemed to pose a threat in the form of pace and passion.

Catalans saunter past Viktoria Plzen in Champions League

In a Champions League Group H match, the home side of Barcelona easily handled visiting Viktoria Plzen by a final score of 2-0. Andres Iniesta made his return to the starting XI, and scored a goal in the process. With glorious goal fests and clean sheets becoming a routine, Barcelona had to come up with something extra special to get the pulses racing at the Camp Nou. A hard-fought match where Viktoria Plzen defended very well saw Barcelona grind out a 2-0 victory in the end.

Barcelona lined out with Abidal and Mascherano at the back, instead of veteran Carles Puyol and the injured Gerard Piqué, and Alves and Adriano as wing-backs but they clearly had no intentions of defending and it only took nine minutes for them to break the deadlock with the most sublime of openers. Iniesta and Messi exchanged three consecutive one-twos before the Spanish assassin dinked the ball past the final defender and slotting the ball coolly into the net on the half volley.

Pep Guardiola and the reigning Champions of Europe took the field on a rainy, frigid night in the capital of Belarus to play the home squad, BATE Borisov, in a Champions League Group H match. Barça looked to gain their first win in Champions League Group H after sputtering at home in the first matchup with AC Milan. They didn’t have to worry about a draw in Minsk. From the start, this match was not even close to being on an even playing surface. Even if the match was lopsided, it was a special treat for the 24,000 Belarusian fans who crammed into the tiny Dynamo Stadium to cheer on the home side in the dark and rainy Eastern European night.

Barça vs. Milan: The Next Day

15 09 2011

Three days after their disappointing road draw versus Real Sociedad, Barcelona came home to begin their Champions League defense with a Group H matchup against AC Milan. Barça came back to Camp Nou excited to get away from Anoeta Stadium, where they’ve dropped four points in two years to Sociedad. Milan was coming to face Barça after a harrowing draw against Serié A foe Lazio, also dropped two points early in league play. Even with both draws, both teams are powerhouses of European football, and it promised to be a match to remember.

Alexandre Pato celebrates after scoring the opening goal in 24 seconds, the sixth fastest in UEFA Champions League history.

The match kicked off, and AC Milan took the ball and it seemed like it would be a slow grinding affair between two giants at the Nou Camp. Then Alexandre Pato, a Milan striker, took the ball and weaved his way unheeded through Barça’s defense without a legitimate challenge. He beat every single defender, found himself 1-on-1 with keeper Victor Valdes, and beat him to the lower left corner only 24 seconds into the match. Barcelona had no idea what hit them, and Camp Nou was dreadfully silent. Barça’s defense had been shredded without regard, and before they even got their cleats in the turf they were down 1-0.

Barça vs. Milan: Match Blog 9/13

13 09 2011

0′ – We’re underway at Camp Nou in Barcelona. The home side is in their colorful red and blues, while Milan is toting their road whites.

1′ – Goal Milan! Pato got the ball from midfield, dribbled straight through Barça’s unprepared defense, who didn’t even attempt a challenge, and went 1 on 1 with the goalie. Only 23 seconds in! One of the fastest goals in recent history. 1-0 Milan

6′ – Barcelona gets into their passing game. Crisp passes at the midfield with slow surges forward, then falling back to midfield to keep passing. Milan’s objective is clear: defend and counter.

12′ – Messi faces off against Milan defender Thiago Silva in the box, resulting in a corner. The resulting corner landed to David Villa just 6 yards away, but he shot it straight into the side netting.

19′ – Milan defender Nesta draws a yellow card after yanking Messi down as the Argentine was in the middle of a spectacular run down the center of the pitch, just outside the box. The free kick was taken by Messi and his bending laser nailed the post and ricocheted out for a goal kick. So close, but nothing yet for Barcelona.

30′ – Messi is free inside the box, and after a high intensity moment of cat-and-mouse, Messi’s flick with the left foot is saved by the Milan keeper.

32′ – Another chance for Leo Messi inside the box, on the opposite side this time with the same foot. His shot was low and easily saved to preserve Milan’s 1-0 lead.

36′ – Goal Barcelona! Messi kept up the pressure, and for the third time in five minutes found himself with the ball in the Milan box. He beat two defenders and drew the goalie out, then put a perfect pass in front of the goal for Pedro to tap it. Simple as that, and the Blaugrana drew level. Barcelona 1, Milan 1.

39′ – Iniesta appears injured, grasping his hamstring similar to the injury that sniped Alexis on Saturday. Cesc Fábregas comes on in replacement for Iniesta.

44′ – Daniel Alves plays a brilliant ball right in front of the keeper to Messi who made a quick cut towards the net, but the side official ruled Messi offside by a very small margin.

45′ – Barcelona with possession, Milan defending with quick counter. Same script for every possession here in the first half.

45+3′ – A lapse in the Milan defense leaves Xavi open for a shot, but his right footed rifle shot goes sailing over the cross bar.

Halftime: Barcelona 1, Milan 1 — The whistle blows to end an exciting first half. AC Milan shocked Barcelona with a goal less than 30 seconds into the match. And for a spell, Barça looked genuinely rattled. But as Milan dropped 10 men behind the ball to defend, Barça steadily put its stamp on the match.

46′ – The second half is underway at Camp Nou. Barcelona starts with possession, fittingly.

48′ – A long, beautiful strike from Xavi just outside the box forces the Milan keeper to lay out for a difficult save. The deflection goes out for a corner.

50′ – Goal Barcelona! The corner from Xavi’s shot came in to David Villa, who was fouled and received a free kick from just outside the box. Villa’s kick bent over the wall and hooked left and away from the keeper into the net to give Barça its first lead of the match. Barcelona 2-1

51′ – Messi creates mayhem in the box, Villa booked for a hard foul on Pato.

67′ – Carles Puyol comes on for the first time this season for Seydou Keita. Xavi Hernandez gives up the Captain’s Armband to the eldest member of the club, who is returning from a long-recovering injury.

70′ – Alves booked for a yellow with a terrible challenge on Emanuelson. Lucky it wasn’t a red.

73′ – Finally a buildup from Milan. Abate earns a corner, and sends the corner in where Seerdorf gets a head on it but it didn’t have any velocity. Easy save for Valdes.

84′ – Ibrahim Afellay replaces David Villa for Barcelona.

86′ – Messi shoots and his shot is saved by the keeper’s left leg and then snatched up for a clearance.

90′ – 3 minutes of added time here, Barcelona looking to close this match up as Milan pushes for an equalizer.

90’+3 – Goal Milan! On the brink of losing, at the last utter chance, Milan strikes! Thiago Silva rises at the death for Milan and heads a last gasp header past the outstretched arms of Valdes to bring the score level just before the final whistle blows! Incredible. Camp Nou is dreadfully silent. Barcelona 2, Milan 2.

90’+4 – Final whistle at Camp Nou, an incredible match dominated mostly by Barcelona but starting and finishing with Milan goals gave the Italian champions a draw at the home of the European champions. Lionel Messi played brilliantly as usual and was Barcelona’s best player, especially in the second half. David Villa scored a genius goal from a free kick, and it seemed destined to be the match-winner. But Milan must get some credit for resolute defending and a strong enough team spirit to keep fighting until the very end.

Final score: Barcelona 2, AC Milan 2
